Driver Education Event

Thunder in the Pines XIX
High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) on the Thunderbolt Circuit at NJMP
August 5th & 6th, 2026

This is a chance for you to drive your car on a real racetrack in a controlled environment.  You do not have to own a Porsche.  You can drive nearly any make car (some restrictions apply).  Novice drivers do not have to do anything special to their car.  The only requirements are that you have your car tech inspected prior to the event to confirm it is safe and you must wear a 2020 or 2025 Snell M or SA approved, full-face helmet (which you can rent at the track).  Snell 2015 helmets are no longer allowed.

Open wheeled cars, SUVs and electric vehicles (EVs) are not permitted.  Convertibles must have a roll bar or cage.  Pop-up roll hoops are not allowed.

This event precedes the PCA Club Race on the Thunderbolt circuit.  Instructors must sign up for both days.  Students and solo drivers have the option to attend for one or two days.

For those who are unsure about driving on the track, we offer three additional options:
1.  Parade Laps - drive your car, no helmet required, in a convoy on the track for 3-6 laps following a pace car.
2.  Taste of the Track - you will be driven in an instructor's car by an instructor for several laps.
3.  Introduction to DE - the student will drive his/her car, which will have to be safety inspected.  A closed face Snell approved helmet is required.  The student will attend the classroom instruction that all novice students attend.  The student, with an instructor in the car, will drive on the track for one run in the green (novice) run group.  If they wish to continue to drive for the rest of the day or event, and pending instructor availability, payment of the balance (cash only) will be possible.  Intro to DE will only be offered on Wednesday.

Registration Fees:
Students:  $650 for 2-days ($600 prior to 6/1); $475 for 1-day
Solo Drivers:  $550 for 2-days ($500 prior to 6/1); $400 for 1-day
Instructors:  $175, 2-days only
Non-driving instructors:  $0, 2-days only
Intro to DE:  $150 for one session in the novice run group
Taste of the Track:  $100

Early bird discount:  For 2-day student and solo drivers, if you pay before June 1, there is a $50 discount applied.

Wednesday evening after the track goes cold, Porsche Edison will sponsor a happy hour at the Finish Line Pub.

Notes:
This is a DE, not a race or practice for a race, and will be run under PCA HPDE Rules and Regulations.  All non-driving coaches (for solo drivers) MUST register and pay the entry fee in advance.  If you are a driver wishing to use a coach, please direct him/her to register prior to the event.
